State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master
Indiana Plumbing Commission, Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) runs plumbing licensing in Indiana. Below: the exact ladder, the transfer doors into Indiana from all 50 states, the renewal and lapse lines, and the master-of-record rule for opening a company — every figure from the board's own publications, checked October 22, 2026.
State ladder: apprentice → journeyman → master Checked in part Checked October 22, 2026
Checked in part. The PLA licensing page states experience in years (4-year apprenticeship) and publishes no total-hour or classroom-hour figure, so hoursTotal and classroomHours are null — the '6,400 hours / 576 classroom hours' figures on secondary websites do not appear on the primary page. The examination fee charged by the testing vendor is not stated on the PLA page (which names PROV as the registration channel but ICC as exam administrator in its FAQs), so exam.fee is null. All fees, routes, the reciprocity answer, and lapse rules below are from PLA primary pages.
| The ladder | Indiana |
|---|---|
| Journeyman credential | Journeyman Plumber |
| Total hours required | not published |
| Classroom hours | not published |
| Apprentice registration | Required — hours count only while registered |
| Exam | PROV (registration via provexam.com per PLA; a PLA FAQ also names ICC as the exam administrator — the page is internally inconsistent) — The Commission must approve exam eligibility before the candidate registers with the vendor. PLA FAQ: the examination may be attempted up to seven (7) times within a two-year period. Journeyman application fee $30 (PLA). |
| License fee | $30 |
| Renewal | Every 2 years (expires December 31 of odd-numbered years); renewal fee $30 |
| Continuing education | None published |
| Master credential | Plumbing Contractor (Indiana's top tier — there is no 'Master Plumber' title) |
Registration, in the board’s terms: Apprentice license required: age 17 or older, enrolled in a Commission-approved apprenticeship program, application fee $10, with a sponsor certification signed by the supervising Journeyman Plumber or Plumbing Contractor. Apprentice licenses expire October 1 of even-numbered years; renewal $10.
Plumbing Contractor (Indiana's top tier — there is no 'Master Plumber' title): One of: completion of an approved apprenticeship program; a plumbing license in another state; or 4 years in the plumbing business under the direction of a licensed plumbing contractor — plus passing the contractor examination. Application fee $50; renewal $100 per 2-year cycle (PLA).
A corporation must hold its own Plumbing Contractor license naming a responsible licensed Plumbing Contractor.
PLA publishes a late-renewal ladder and, at 3+ years expired, a formal reinstatement that requires a personal appearance before the Plumbing Commission.
Reinstatement: Expired less than 3 years: late renewal on payment of the renewal fee plus late fees ($15 if received before March 1 of the renewal year; $100 journeyman / $200 contractor after March 1). Expired 3 years or more: reinstatement — pay the current renewal fee plus the current initial application fee (reinstatement fee schedule: $60 journeyman / $150 contractor), submit a letter of work history or resume, and appear personally before the Commission.
Past the line: No outer deadline and no re-examination requirement for reinstatement is published on the PLA pages retrieved 2026-10-22; reinstatement with personal appearance is the stated path at 3+ years.
Indiana endorses journeyman licenses from: none. The PLA FAQ states it plainly: 'Reciprocity is not available for journeyman and contractor plumbers. Instead, you must present an application and pay the fee. Then the application goes before the board. If board approved you must take the exam and pass.' Indiana accepts nobody by endorsement.

The seat: Licensed Plumbing Contractor (responsible contractor of record). A plumbing corporation must itself be licensed as a Plumbing Contractor and must file and maintain the name and address of the business and of its responsible licensed Plumbing Contractor. If the sole operating contractor dies or is incapacitated, PLA issues a temporary contractor license (6-month increments, up to 2 years total) so the business can wind down or qualify a replacement.
