Guides · Renewal
Renewal looks like the boring part of the ladder. It is actually where licenses are lost — not at the exam, not on the job, but on a date, quietly, while the plumber was busy working.
Every license has an expiry date and, behind it, a reinstatement deadline. Between them: late fees, catch-up continuing education, a form. Past the second: in the strict states, the file closes. Texas closes it at 2 years — expired past that, the license cannot be renewed at all. Minnesota closes a second door at 2 years: the lapsed license loses its reciprocity value and must retest.
Texas requires 6 hours a year. Minnesota requires 16 hours per 2 years. CE owed is the most common reason a renewal stalls — and the easiest to prevent, because it is the only part of renewal entirely in your control.
Track three things per license: the renewal date, the reinstatement deadline, and CE hours banked. Put both dates on a calendar with alerts six months out. The renewal checker tells you which side of the second line you are on today.
