How to start a plumbing business: license first

Most startup guides start with a business plan. Plumbing has a prior question: who is your master of record? Until that seat is filled, nothing else you buy is usable.

The order

1. The seat. Your state requires a master plumber in the legally responsible role — Texas's Responsible Master (one company at a time, $300,000 insurance), Minnesota's responsible master at all times, Florida's qualifier, California's RME. Yours, hired, or partnered: decide first. 2. The contractor license that the seat unlocks. 3. Bond and insurance at the state's minimums. 4. Formation, EIN, local permits. 5. Only now: truck, tools, marketing.

The generic-cost lie

Startup guides quote $10,000–$50,000 for “a plumbing business” — a range wide enough to be useless, because the real number is state property: license and exam fees, bond premiums, insurance minimums, and the market price of the master seat if you are not filling it yourself. The owner gate checker reads your state's actual gate.

The franchise alternative, honestly priced

Benjamin Franklin: $143,273–$286,702 all-in, 6% royalty. Mr. Rooter: $79,975–$187,140, 5–7%. Both still need your state's seat filled. A franchise buys brand and systems; the license gate is unmoved.
