Guides · The exam
Failing is common and survivable. What it costs depends on three state-specific rules most candidates never read until they need them.
Some states cap attempts inside a window: Indiana allows up to 7 attempts in 2 years through its exam vendor. Blow the window and the eligibility file itself can go stale — new application, new documentation round.
Every attempt is a new exam fee, and many vendors impose a cooling-off period between attempts. Budget both before the first attempt, not after the first failure: the total cost of the license is the exam fee times the attempts it actually takes, plus course money if you buy help.
Failed candidates get a breakdown by section. The cheapest retake preparation is targeted: the sections you failed, in the code your state adopts. A full-price general course is the most expensive way to fix a two-section problem.
Your state's exam facts — vendor, fee, retakes — are on its ladder page.
