Guides · Renewal
The question is never whether your license expired. It is how long ago — because boards run a clock after expiry, and the clock decides whether you are filing a form or re-entering your trade.
Most boards let an expired license be reinstated for a period — months to a couple of years — on payment of the renewal and late fees plus any continuing education owed. You cannot legally work on the license while it is expired, but the license itself survives.
Past the deadline, the board treats the file as closed. Texas states it without decoration: a license expired over 2 years is renewed never — the holder re-registers as an apprentice and re-passes the examinations, “like you never held it.” Other states retest, or require the full exam route on documented experience.
Services will happily sell “renewal processing” on either side of the line. Inside the window it is an expensive way to file a form. Past the window it is money for a filing the board will not accept. Know your side of the line first — the renewal checker computes it from your state and month count.
