Can I transfer my plumbing license to another state?

Sometimes. Rarely cleanly. And the answer is never about “plumbing licenses” in general — it is about your two states, your level, and whether your license is active. Here is how to find your door.

Door 1 — endorsement (the short list)

A handful of state pairs have real agreements: TX–LA, TX–AR, WA–ID, OR–ID, OR–MT, MN–ND, MN–SD. If your pair is on the list, the destination board licenses you on your home license after verifying it directly with your home board. Conditions always apply.

Door 2 — review

Washington's model for everyone except Idaho: present the license for consideration. The board weighs your license and experience and decides. Documentation is the application — certified verification, hour records, employer history.

Door 3 — the exam route (the default)

For most pairs this is the answer: no endorsement, so you qualify for the destination's journeyman exam on your experience. Your years are not wasted — they are your eligibility — but they must be verifiable years. Boards credit what they can confirm.

Door 0 — the one that closes all the others

A lapsed home license. No state endorses one, and review boards start from good standing. If your license has lapsed, your first move is at home: reinstate or restart (renewal checker), then transfer.
